BULLETIN
March 30, 2025 — Fourth Sunday of Lent
Throughout Lent we will continue to gather in a more stripped down fashion, with no adornments in the sanctuary, and simpler style of worship, as we get back to the practices of the early Church. Worshiping this way may feel uncomfortable or strange, but we believe it will help us get toward the essentials of our faith. We invite you to dress as you feel comfortable, whether casual or formal.

Creed
We trust in the God who formed us out of dust, and breathed life into us.
We trust in his Son Jesus who, for our sake, lived as one of us, bringing liberation.
We trust in the Holy Spirt, who challenges, sustains, and inspires us each day.
We confess ourselves Christ’s disciples,
Sharing in his mission and sacrifice, for the healing of the world.
Calvary’s Mission Statement (composed by Yvonne Lee)
We, the members of Calvary Episcopal Church, believe in taking the journey of God’s love and service to those who know Christ, and those who seek Christ.
Prayers of the People. We will gather in pairs to pray for one another.
Confession From “Black Liturgies” By Cole Arthur Riley
We confess that we have not always lived the way we wanted. We have not always honored ourselves, this land or the people whose weight it bears. There are days we believe in our own invincibility, shrinking from the frailty of life. Days when we have taken for granted al1 that is good and true and beautiful in this life. We are truly sorry, and we ask forgiveness-from you, from the world, and from ourselves. Our lives have been held together by every mundane mercy. We claim this grace, forgiving ourselves, and believing in our souls that we have done what we could to be human and whole in this world. Amen.
Celebrant
Let your soul receive this rest: The God who made even the stars mortal sends the light of you
to visit those who remain. As you look into the sacred dark of death, unknowable and opaque, may the mystery of what is to come be a comfort and not a terror. And as you feel the forgiveness of the divine cover you for any harm, for anything left undone in this life may God call to mind the beauty and wonder that you’ve offered this world. May you feel your soul now put at peace, in sacred harmony with the comos. Inhale. Exhale. As you enter a sacred and abiding rest. May mystery be your borne now and forever. Amen.

Doxology Praise God, From Whom All Blessing Flow AA-650
The Eucharist Our eucharist prayer was composed by the Rev. Amanda Barbee and Rev. Dr. Kelle Brown
The Lord be with you
And also with you
Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give God thanks and praise
It is truly right and a good and joyful thing to praise you O God, for though we stray through the wilderness of sin, still you walk with us, guiding back to your truth. When we are lost in the valley of the shadow of death, there you are again, leading us through, stilling our fears, and comforting our distress. And even in our despair, when we feel like dry bones, lifeless and spent, yet still you are with us, calling us back to new life and hope. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels, ancestors and saints, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed indeed is the one who came in your name O Lord. For, when you saw us lost and stumbling, you sent your only Son, Jesus. Laying aside all glory and power, he became one of us, walking among us, living our struggles, hearing our laments, healing our hurts, teaching us your ways, freeing from bondage and sin, reminding us who and whose we are.
On the night that he was wrongfully incarcerated, Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks to God, he broke it into pieces without the suggestion of privilege or supremacy. He gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
After supper, he took the cup, and giving thanks gave it to them saying:“This cup is the new covenant, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”
Therefore, in remembrance of him, we proclaim this mystery of faith
Christ has died
Christ has risen
Christ is come again
And so, until his coming again, we share this bread and this cup. We pray you: send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, making them for us the precious body and blood of your son Jesus Christ. Pour out your Spirit upon us too, uniting us in your Son’s body and sacrifice, making us one people, healing our brokenness, and strengthening us for your mission of renewing and restoring this world. All this we ask for your Son Jesus Christ, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, all glory and honor is yours almighty father, now and forever. Amen.
And now, let us pray those words Jesus taught us to pray.
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Lamb of God. You take away the sins of the World
Lamb of God You take away the sins of the World
Lamb of God Grant us your peace
These are the gifts of God for you, God’s people. Every time you eat this bread of equity and drink this cup that pours freedom, you proclaim with your life the saving death of the risen God until he comes again.
Communion Hymn The Blood Will Never Lose It’s Power AA-256
Post-Communion Prayer BCP p.365
Be at peace. May you access the fulness of a joy that allows for both an interior solemnity and a levity. May you learn to be at rest with yourself, able to access a peace that carries memory but isn’t chained to the past. And may you laugh, allowing the mystery of joy to steady you always and keep you from despair. Amen. From “Black Liturgies” by Cole Arthur Riley

A Reading from the Book of Numbers (26:33-27:11)
Now Zelophehad ben Hepher had no sons, for he had daughters and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. After the division of the land the daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Now Zelophehad was the child of Hepher descended from Gilead, descended from Machir, descended from Manasseh-of the Manassite clans, descended from Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. The sisters stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the whole congregation of women, children, and men at the entrance of the tent of meeting and they said: “Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the assembly of those who assembled themselves together against the MAJESTY OF THE HEAVENS in the company of Korah; for his own sin he died, and he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” Now Moses brought their case forward before the JUDGE OF ALL THE EARTH. And the JUDGE OF ALL FLESH spoke to Moses, saying: Since the daughters of Zelophehad are correct in their word, you shall indeed give them a hereditary possession among their father’s brothers and pass the possession of their father to them. To the women and men of Israel you shall speak, saying, “When a man dies and has no son, then you all shall pass his possession on to his daughter. If he has no daughter, then you shall all give his possession to his brothers. If he has no brothers, then you all shall give his possession to his father’s brothers. And if his father has no brothers, then you all shall give his possession to his nearest relative of his clan and he shall possess it. It shall be for the women and men of Israel a statute and ordinance just as the JUST GOD commanded Moses.”

Psalm 56
Be gracious to me, God, for people trample on me;
all day long fighters crush me.
My enemies trample on me all day long,
for many fight against me, Exalted One.
On days I fear, I place my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust;
I am not afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
All day long they my words slander;
against me for evil all their thoughts are.
They attack, they hide,
they watch my steps according to their designs on my soul.
On account of their iniquity free me from them;
in wrath bring down the peoples,
You yourself have kept count of my wandering;
put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your scroll?
Then my enemies will turn back on the day I call out.
This I know, that God is for me.
In God, whose word I praise,
in SHE WHO SPEAKS LIFE, whose word I praise:
in God I trust; I shall not fear.
What can the woman-born do to me?
Upon me are my vows to you God;
I shall offer thank offerings to you.
For you have delivered my soul from death
and were not my feet kept from falling?
That I may walk before God
in the light of life.
God!Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (18:1-28)
After speaking at the Areopagus, Paul departed Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a Jew, by name Aquila, a native of Pontus recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all Jews to depart Rome; Paul went to them. And because he had the same trade, he stayed with them and they worked together; they were tentmakers by trade. Now Paul, after staying there for quite some time, said farewell to the sisters and brothers and sailed for Syria and with him were Priscilla and Aquila; he cut his hair at Cenchreae for he had taken a vow. When they arrived in Ephesus, Paul left them there, but first he himself went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the other Jews. When they asked him to stay longer, he declined. Now a certain Jewish man, Apollos by name, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man had been instructed in the Way of the Messiah and spoke with a fiery spirit and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him in and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. And when he wished to cross over into Achaia, the sisters and brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him; upon his arrival he greatly helped those who had through grace come to believe.

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Luke (10:38-42)
Glory to you, Lord Christ
Now as Jesus and his disciples went on the way, he entered a certain village; a certain woman, by name Martha, welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary who was sitting at the Teacher’s feet listening to his word. But Martha was distracted by a great deal of serving; so she came to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving by myself? Speak to her so that she might help me.” But the Teacher answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered by much. Yet only one thing is necessary; Mary has chosen the better portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
