Acolytes

Purpose: An acolyte is an attendant to a priest. The job is to assist the celebrant or priest and enhance the worship service to help glorify God. Serving as an acolyte is a commitment of your time and talents to serve the Lord. Beyond serving at our regular worship services, acolytes also serve on special occasions such as baptisms and the National Festival of Acolytes at the National Cathedral.

Joining: Acolytes must be in at least the 4th grade and 10 years old.

Adult Bible Study

Purpose: Calvary hosts Adult Bible Study on Wednesdays at 6pm, and Sundays at 8:45am. At our Wednesday study, we share a potluck meal. We study using the “Precepts for Living,” a weekly study guide for the Uniform International Lessons published by Urban Ministries International. We study scripture together to grow in our knowledge and love of God, and to become better disciples of Jesus Christ.

Joining: All are welcome to join us as we study the Word of God. It is not necessary to be a member of Calvary. Just come to any of the Sunday or Wednesday bible classes. You can find the scripture lessons for this week’s study here.

Altar Guild

Purpose: The Altar Guild partners with the priests to make the worship life of the parish run smoothly. It is organized for the care of the sanctuary, the sacred vessels and the vestments. The guild is organized into four working teams lead by a team leader. Each team is responsible for altar guild services and activities in its scheduled week. The altar hangings are changed according to the colors of the church seasons or for special occasions. The Altar Guild is called upon throughout the year to lend its assistance to provide special flower arrangements, such as at Homecoming Day, Thanksgiving, Baptisms, weddings, funerals, Poinsettia Plants at Christmas, and Lilies at Easter time. On the first Sunday in June the guild gathers for Corporate Communion, enjoy a delicious catered luncheon and a wonderful program with family and friends.

Joining: We invite all who are interested in joining the Altar Guild to do so you may contact the director who will be pleased to assign you to a team. If you have a passion for flower arranging and would like to only be involved in that area of the guild duties let the director know that and she will accommodate you.

Archives

Purpose: The Archives Committee produces high quality, scholarly research on the history of Calvary Episcopal Church, and preserves the church documents that have historical significance. The Committee establishes, coordinates, and preserves the tangible heritage of Calvary Episcopal Church through research, education, and treatment. It educates parishioners about the nature and condition of our church so as to change knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

Audit Committee

Purpose: The Audit Committee is a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged facilitating the annual audit of the Church’s finances, as carried out by a certified third-party.

Birthday Guilds

Purpose: Calvary hosts twelve Birthday Guilds, one for each month of the year. Each guild works to promote fellowship among those persons at Calvary who were born in a given month. The Guild each collect and contribute a yearly sacrificial offering to support the Churches ministries of service, teaching and healing throughout the neighborhood, the community, and the Greater Metropolitan DC Area. The Guilds also take on other service and fellowship projects at the discretion of their members.

Joining: Each Birthday Guild elects a chair from among its own members, responsible for receiving new members. The Church Office has a full roster of all Birthday Guild Chairs, and their contact information.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Purpose: Calvary’s Chapter of the The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is a ministry for the spread of Christ's Kingdom among men and boys in the Episcopal/Anglican Communion. Our ministry is to help men and boys deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, through the disciplines of prayer, study and service. The Brotherhood has established mentoring program with the Bishop Walker School for Boys, and hosts two fundraisers a year to support Calvary’s Homeless Breakfast. Last year, we organized a panel discussion on the topic: "Young Black Men — An Endangered Species?” moderated by Mr. Kojo Nambdi.

Buildings and Grounds Committee

Purpose: The Buildings and Grounds Committee is a standing committee of the Vestry. It is responsible for the physical plant of the church. It supervises maintenance, repairs and improvements to the church property and grounds.

Center for the Study of Faith in Justice

Purpose: The Center for the Study of Faith in Justice is an independent non-profit of Calvary Episcopal Church, founded by the Rev. Gayle Fisher-Stewart. The Center the intersection of faith and justice in the world, provides a safe space for discussing issues that divide the body of Christ, and organizes speakers and training to guide faith communities and organizations in seeking reconciliation.

Children's Sunday School

Purpose: Our Children’s Sunday School meets each Sunday, at 10am, during worship services. We provide activities for the benefit, education, welfare, growth of children and to increase their knowledge of the Bible. We encourage Christian character and living. The Church School activities includes reading, games, trips, crafts, plays, songs, fellowship, and participation in church services.

Joining: Children may join our Sunday Scholl by attending Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in the West Hall. Adults wishing to support the Sunday school must contact the Chairperson.

Contemporary Choir

Purpose: We offer praise God through contemporary song and welcome persons to join to help uplift the name of Jesus. Currently we are growing and adding new members. WE offer 1-2 concerts throughout the year, and are involved with providing music for other guild programs (ex. Altar Guild Brunch, March Birthday Guild concerts, etc.) during the year.

Communications Committee

Purpose: Communications is a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged with overseeing and coordinating all digital and analogue communications media for the congregation, and with seeking new methods to promote the Church and its ministries.

Purpose: The Order of the Daughters of the King work to extend Christ's Kingdom through Prayer, Service and Evangelism. We host onthly meetings that includes bible study except July and August; Receive Corporate Communion on a monthly basis during the Sunday Service; Care for our sick and shut-in, Donate funds to the Order and Parish; Reach out to others by donating food, clothing and/or funds as much as possible.

Joining: Joining requires completing the National Study Guide, consisting of twelve sessions, requiring at least a three month period of preparation. The Study Guide offers insight into the basic philosophy and practices of the Order.

It is charged training church members to go out, and share the good news of Christ with the world. The Committee seeks out, plans and promotes opportunities to get the Church membership out into the neighborhood, and to bring the neighborhood into contact with the Church.

Finance Committee

Purpose: The Finance Committee is a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged with maintaining the Churches financial affairs, records and procedures in good order, and advising the Vestry in all matters related to the Churches financial assets.

Homeless Breakfast Ministry

Purpose: We serve the needs of those less fortunate by distributing clothes, praying with them, providing food, sharing information, and offering a sense of community for those who may feel abandoned. We serve to an average of eighty homeless men and women on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturdays of each month, at 8am.

Joining: Just show up at the Church to volunteer any time between 6-9am on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Saturday of the month.

Lay Eucharistic Ministries

Purpose: Lay Ministers visit our sick and shut-in members to bring the sacrament and offer prayers. The purpose of the Lay Eucharistic Ministers. During our worship services, Lay Eucharistic Ministers serve as readers, and cup bearers, as well as offering healing prayers.

Legal Committee

Purpose: The Legal Committee is a standing committee of the vestry. It is charged with reviewing and advising the Vestry with regard to all matters of legal import to the Church.

Music Council

Purpose: The Music Council is a sub-committee of the Worship/Music/Evangelism Committee, a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged with overseeing all ministries of music in the congregation. The Committee coordinates the efforts of our various choirs and musicians, plans concerts. The Committee also solicits feedback from the Congregation and the neighborhood at large, to ensure that our ministry of music is engaging, uplifting and spiritually fulfilling.

Parish Choir

Purpose: We offer praise God through song, and lead the congregation in musical praise. The Parish Choir leads all hymns during worship, and performs a solo anthem at each service.

Pastoral Care Committee

Purpose: Pastoral Care is a standing committee of the vestry. It serves to oversee, coordinate and promote ministries of Christian care and outreach, including: Alms, Bereavement, Children/Youth Outreach, Christian Care Giving, Community Outreach, Counseling Homeless Ministries, Prison Ministry, Substance Abuse Ministry, and other pastoral needs as they arise.

St. Monica Guild

Purpose: St. Monica Guild is a hospitality Guild for Calvary. It provides refreshments after 10:00 am worship services on the second Sunday of each month, and serves on other occasions at the request of the Rector and Vestry. The group also conducts a number of fundraisers to support organizations in the community that support those in crisis.

Stewardship and Outreach Committee

Purpose: Stewardship and Outreach is a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged with assisting members in tending to the gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure that God has entrusted to us all, and challenging our members to use those gifts sacrificially for the glory of God. The Committee hosts workshops to help parishioners in achieving these goals, plans the congregation’s annual giving campaign, and coordinates charity responses to emergency situations.

Seniors Group

Purpose: The Senior Group is a fellowship group that provides an opportunity for those over the age of 55 to meet, greet and become acquainted in a social setting; to share and receive information which will enhance our daily lives. We meet once a month (usually on the second Monday of each month) at 11am, to pray and share fellowship. We generally host a guest speaker to discuss topics of interest to the community.

Joining: To become an active member one must be 55 years or older and pay a membership fee of $15.

Vergers

Purpose: The Vergers Guild is responsible for welcoming all parishioners and visitors to Calvary Episcopal Church. They manage the logistics of worship, including: passing out Sunday bulletins, collecting and taking up offertory, helping parishioners during Communion, ensuring that the Carillions are played before the start of Sunday service, setting up the A/V system for worship and counting attendees and maintaining a log of the same on a weekly basis.

Vestry

Purpose: The Vestry has the responsibility for the corporate property and financial affairs of the church and, in cooperation with the clergy of the church, develops and implements programs which will promote the mission of the church through teaching, preaching, social action, worship and service.

Volunteer Choir

Purpose: The Volunteer Choir Chair contacts members of the choirs to determine who is available to sing for special occasions such as funerals, memorial services, and other unplanned occasions where music is needed.

Joining: All are welcome to join in with other choir members at any time to sing for special occasions. Most of the time there are no rehearsals.

Worship Council

Purpose: The Worship Council is a sub-committee of the Worship/Music/Evangelism Committee, a standing committee of the Vestry. It is charged with overseeing all aspects of worship at Calvary, including the planning and coordinating of Sunday and Holiday Services. The Committee solicits, reviews, and implements feedback from the congregation to identify how keep our Worship services engaging, challenging and spiritually nourishing for all.

Young Adults

Purpose: The Young Adults Ministry programs and offers fellowship, service, worship and study activities targeted at those in their 20s and 30s, to help this population grow as disciples. The Ministry is also responsible for identifying way the congregation at large can better respond to the needs of young adults, and reach out to the community of young people in our neighborhood.
